Abstract:

All zoos the world over are based upon the tradition of managing wild species with captivity and coercion. However, new zoo keeping tools like reward-based training and environmental enrichment show the way to a new concept of zoos, the “Unzoo Alternative” where animal management is founded on humane principles of animal attraction, reward and collaboration. In fact some wildlife sanctuaries already function in this way. Could this be the seed of a true revolution in zoos as we know them?
