Abstract:

Digital technologies in zoos present promising avenues to support animal welfare, conservation efforts and visitor experiences by influencing human–animal interactions (HAIs). These interventions are especially valuable in breed-for-release programmes and other scenarios where HAIs should be limited or carefully managed. This chapter reviews the application of these technologies across zoos and related institutions, examining their impact on HAIs and their potential roles in contemporary zoo settings. We introduce a conceptual framework to gauge the effects of HAIs and technological interventions within breed-for-release contexts, supplemented by a case study that showcases the reduction of HAIs through technology. The chapter concludes with a scenario that prompts reflection on the advantages, disadvantages and trade-offs associated with using technology to reduce HAIs in breed-for-release programmes.
