Abstract:

Enrichment decreases stress in captive animals and helps to promote natural behaviors. Effective enrichment programs decrease stereotypies and other abnormal behaviors. The basis for proper enrichment is proper husbandry, which includes excellent water quality when discussing aquatic animals.

Enrichment varies by species, age, and must sometimes be tailored individually. Training animals for medical procedures increases the effectiveness of medical treatment and decreases the associated risks for the animal and the staff.
