Abstract:
Identifies the sources of sound in the laboratory animal environment and categorizes these sounds in terms of frequency and sound pressure level. Particular attention is paid to high frequency sounds (above 10kHz). Recordings were made in a wide range of animal facilities and over 40 different sound sources were investigated. As many laboratory animals are much more sensitive to a wider range of sound frequency than humans, it seems likely that the levels of sound reported could adversely affect animals through physiological or behavioral changes, or may even cause sensory damage in extreme cases. Implications for further research are made
