Abstract:

Abstract Poor animal welfare is associated with poor animal production or health, and concerns of consumers influence market access. International standards for animal welfare are of importance to the meat industries. An animal has good welfare if it is healthy, comfortable, well nourished, safe, able to express innate behavior, and not suffering from pain or distress. Appropriate social environments are necessary and individual housing does not allow adequate social contact. Poor welfare is apparent in behavior, production, and physiology. Acute threats to animal welfare come from painful procedures whereas chronic threats come from housing type and management routines.
